MSter
Ok have really got moving on things since i have removed the rear tub and now its time to address the brakes/brake lines shocks etc.The car has been off the road for at least 13 years so the rear brakes were fairly ceased on i will be replacing the cylinders, handbrake cable, brake lines, brake shoes, adjusters, retaining springs dust caps, shocks etc however the drums appear to be fairly good with no deep scoring or lip round the edge do you think these would be ok to re-use?? Does anyone know the MOT rules on this one?? Im not trying to cut corners especially when it comes to the brakes but they seem servicable so why discard?? Nick Jones
You should fine maximum allowable internal diameter in the workshop manual - may even be cast into the drum. If they are not lipped they are probably fine - just give the friction surfaces a good scrub with production paper remove rust/glaze. Bear in mind that the old shoes may well have had asbestos content and take dust precautions! Not sure if Vitesse drums are available at present (of if you have a Herald or Vitesse in fact :B), they were certainly out of stock for a while.Nick
Steve Cureton
I'd say clean them up as suggested by Nick and reuse them. If they later turn out to be oval or warped then it's no big deal to change them in a few minutes.
