Lord Sorbington
What's the optimum tyre size for Stag type alloys on these cars? Is it 195/70/14?I keep asking, and keep forgetting........
DJB_Harvey
Personally ive always used 185/70/14...but ive seen 195 section also , but i think this is "over tyring" the rim width.
AlanChatterton
I have 195/70/14 on both the S and the Stag, looks and handles great. a bit wider than they should...........but, I think it looks fine.Stag should have had 185, S should have 175.......... CRAJ
195/70/14 WILL GIVE THE CLOSEST ROLLING CIRCUMFERENCE TO ORIGINAL, AND THEREFORE THE LEAST SPEEDO INACCURACY ON A 2500S, ASSUMING THAT THE ORIGINAL 175 TYRE WAS AN 80 SERIES.A 185/70/14 WILL LOWER THE GEARING BY APPROX. 5% WHEN NEW AND 8% WHEN WORN TO JUST ABOVE LEGAL, AND AFFECT THE SPEEDO AND FUEL CONSUMPTION.I HAVE 195/70/14s ON MY S TOO AND CAN ECHO WHAT ALAN SAYS ABOUT THEM. CRAJ
Sorry, recalculated and the difference in gearing would be approx. 4% when new and closer to 6% when worn. Not a big amount really. Might be worth shopping around for tyre prices though, sometimes a slightly larger tyre is cheaper due to it being a more popular fitment. How much are 185/14s if you could find them? Blackcircles list 15 starting at £29 -- must be a popular size for van tyres (quite a few LT, 8-ply etc in the Blackcircles list)175R13 (= 175/80-R13) seems to be getting difficult to find now for those still running them on steel rims. Blackcircles only list three.
AlanChatterton
I bought mine off the net from www.jettyres.co.uk.195/70/14, Corsa tyres, got them on the stag, perfect, and only cost £104 delivered!!
Lord Sorbington
Don't buy van tyres, the sidewalls are too stiff for cars. They make the car twitchy, especially on wet roads. The 195/70/14s seem to come in at about £30 each. Alan, I'm pondering black minilites or Stag alloys for the estate....Whadda you guys reckon? Alex
Black minilites or revs would look the dogs wotsits.......have monster munch got smaller?
AlanChatterton
Black minlighs would spoilt it..................need some shiney bits on there.I think Revvies are better, but S alloys (when polished!!) look great.Go with the Stag/S alloys............I think I can scrape a set together than need a quick tickle on the old polisher...............I may even be persuaded to do them for you................. Picked a set up from him a couple of weeks back and has done a reasonable job of it. Basically £200 for 4 wheels sans tyres (I already had some lines up). Aw krap :D Somebody -- please protect me from myself and go buy them quick before I succumb ::)I really do not need shiny alloy wheels on Saloon with rusting sills, rusting door bottoms, a rusting rear valance and a rusting nose cone ;D ;D ;D
Lord Sorbington
But if you've got to buy a new set of tyres anyway you may as well get the ones you want. They're cheaper than the 175s too......It would be an investement for the future. Is this helping.....? :)

Spitfire2500
Back to tyre sizes:Much wider choice available in 185/65-R14 (including Toyo Proxies CF-1) compared to 195/70-R14. I'll go for 185/65-R14 when the time comes to replace the tyres on my shiney new wheels :D
Glenn
Well done Bill - you got those wheels! They will look great. Here's a handy link: http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/gearspeed/Looks like your 185/65/14s will be pretty close to the original wheel diameter on your TC. I've heard good things about Toyo Proxies too.

spotlight
The 2500 Tc i'm buying has 13 inch steel rims. Is that a standard fitment?I am wondering whether to go for stag alloys to replace themwhich i believe are 14 inch.If the new alloys have 175/80 section tyres will they1 Fit the car without modification2Mess up the speedo/increase or decrease revs and therefore affect fuel consumption.3 Mess up gearing so that car is under or over geared. Deleted User
spotlight-13 inch steelies are standard to the 2500tc only the 2500S had the stag alloys, which are 14" the 14" alloys go on without any mods, and dont really have a detrimental effect to the gearing/revs etc -if you read through the thread above it will fill you in on tire choice etc
