Rui Guimaraes Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Hello.I'm reassembling my mk1 GT6 engine and I have bought a Payen gasket. The gasket does not have any side marked "TOP" and is completely symetrical. Can anyone tell me which side goes up?? The flat side or the embossed side?ThanksregardsRui
Velocita Rosso Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 The top is where you see 6 totally `halo`d ` circles, the underside being all black with shiny joints , cylinder to cylinder
rotoflex Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Awesome, a Mk1 engine going back together.Be sure to take pains sealing the pushrod tubes in the head, there have been complaints of them leaking.
Rui Guimaraes Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 Sorry but I couldn't understand your explainations regarding the way the gasket goes. That way, here are some pictures of both possible positions. Please tell me what should be the correct one A or B.Position APosition BThanks,RegardsRui
Doug Paterson Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Is that a gasket for a recessed block? If so I believe the raised lips on the gasket should be facing downwards. If you don't have a recessed block engine though then maybe you need another gasket altogether....CheersD
Rui Guimaraes Posted March 24, 2011 Author Posted March 24, 2011 Sorry Doug but what do you mean by recessed block? How can i check it?The block is marked with the number KC6090E which I believ to be the original engine of my mkI GT6.Regarding the gasket, this is the correct one for my engine and is exactly like the same type as the one installed before. Thanks againRui
Doug Paterson Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Sorry - I hadn't picked up it was Mk1 - In which case there was only one type of block.Think we need a Mk1 expert to come along :)
rotoflex Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 I thought that was a recessed block gasket, too.Later GT6 blocks had circular recesses on the top around the cylinder bores. Please post a photo of the top of your engine block, like the ones above but without the gasket on so that the block surface can be seen.
andy thompson Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 Mk1 flat top block - (all flat top until about 1972) - Position A is correct
