Manifold to down pipe gasket

Timbers

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've just replaced the gasket that sits between the manifold and the down pipe and its still blowing! I sanded down both surfaces and tightened the nuts as much as you'd want to tighten brass nuts.

i'm going to have to use exhaust putty. Is this normal? Any ideas would be really appreciated

Thanks
Tim

You shouldn't need any putty, are the threads on your manifold studs good? If not, replace them with new ones - use plenty of heat to get the old ones out, otherwise they will snap as soon as you look at them. Are you using new nuts too?
Cheers,
Bill.

Did you use the long brass manifold nuts? They are usually 2 x the normal length as brass is a lot softer.

Also use a thread restoring nut first; it's like a die but does not cut the threads, rather reforms the thread or buy new studs!
