Hello

We bought another engine for the TC about a month ago, and I've started the prep for paint. I took the thermostat cover off and took thermostat out it seems pretty crusty. Is it just a flush it job or could it be something more sinister. Any advice would be appreciated.

Spare water pump, next to one from engine

Many Thanks

The chances are if the water pump housing is like that then so are the rest of the waterways. A result of running/standing for long periods with no antifreeze. Have you had any overheating issues? If the rad is in good nick and she ran ok, you could take a chance on attacking the waterways you can get to (water pump & rear block drain) with a hose pipe to shift as much loose as you can then just try her on the road.  The other option is to pop a couple of core plugs out to see how bunged up things are behind them. With core plugs out you can flush/dig further

these engines are pretty tough with regards to overheating, pop the block drain plug out (ie. unscrew and remove rather than just open the tap). stick a hose in the water pump hole and flush through until the water runs clear, seeing how much crud comes out. If the engine is out the car anyway, for the sake of 3 new core plugs pop out the ones that are under the exhaust manifold, flush again with the hose - digging any hard crud out with a screwdriver or similar. That should shift the worst of it and give you confidence (or not) in the internal condition of the rest of the core plugs.
