Engine removal advice

Hi all, this weekend I'll be removing the engine out of my mk2 2000 spares car. Looking in the haynes it says to remove it from underneath, however i'm sure I've heard people on here talking about removing it from the top? I have the use of an engine hoist and as the car is scrap one possibility is to rip the front out and remove it that way. Any ideas on which is the best way? I think I'll be splitting the engine from the box in the car as i'm not using the gearbox. Any help greatly appreciated.

Never removed an engine from one of these cars myself. But I'ld imagine it would be easier to remove the engine with the gearbox attached and then separate them. Detaching the gearbox while still in the car involves disconnecting the drive shaft undoing the gearbox mounts and dropping it enough so you can reach the top bolts.
