Just answered my own question, would appear to be exactly what it is.... a mk1 2000 engine! Just that most lists only give MB prefix as 2000 mk1, and don't mention the MC at all. This engine no is MC274HE, does the low no. indicate a very early engine?

Just a couple of more points to note...the later MC series suffer MORE from main bearing failure than the earlier engines ..seems to be NO 4  main that suffers the most..poor oil supply ? or poor crank steel ? i dont know but all the MC engines ive overhauled the mains have been the problem. Earlier small bearing engines pre MB 60000 only seem to suffer  from general bearing wear not crank journal problems BUT sourcing quality lead indium shells is getting much harder. MB engines 200.000 miles before overhaul MC engines 100,000 provided you keep the oil clean ! As Richard also states earlier engines DO rev better..valve bounce seems to be the only limiting factor !
