engine number 2500s

does anyone know what the A stands for on the end of the engine number on my 77 250s HEA,my other 2500s ive stripped down for parts and a tc both just end in HE and all three are autos

The A was originally for Auto as you suspected.

thanks strange they put it on the 77 model and not the 74 and 76 ones that i stripped to put in my stag project,

If the A was part of the chassis number then I'd agree it stands for Auto - but on the engine number? Not so sure....

I thought the engine number ended in BW if it had started life attached to an Auto box.

Was it BW for the 35 and A for the BW65?

As Andy suggests I think that's for the '65 Auto box  ... Anybody got a late original auto car to confirm ?

i looked at another car 74 tc and it had hebw so i guess it is borg warner it prob stands for they must change from that to an A  for auto or just nothing on my other two depends whos doing the stamping on the day

Just had a look at my original `77 2500 S auto estate and it too has an "A" on the end of its engine number if that helps ?  :-/

That is the case in regards to Stags, so probably the same rings true for the Saloons too.
