ferny Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Why would you want to mix and match old (with unknown levels of wear) and new? Unless you fancy getting under there again to replace them all sooner than is necessary.
nicmk1est Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 right,,il go for full set main bearings
Nick Jones Posted August 28, 2012 Posted August 28, 2012 Quite normal for the inner two mains to show more wear than the outers. They take thump from two cylinders. Replace the whole set seeing as you've already dropped the front main cap. I've been known to check the rear main and if it's still grey, leave the front well alone (as it's usually the least worn of the 4) to avoid the aggro of disturbing and re-sealing the bridge piece at the front.......BEs should be changed as a set also - imagine they are fairly coppery looking if the centre mains are like that. You'll probably have to settle for County/King HD tri-metal though. VP2s pretty much gone now.Is yours late enough to have the bigger bearings? Mk 1s come in two flavours so take care!CheersNick
nicmk1est Posted August 28, 2012 Author Posted August 28, 2012 i think mine is cross over year-my eng number is MB50667 HE,,im watching a set of big end bearings on ebay(fingers crossed)

thescrapman Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 1555 wrote:no,i just got new bearings,,,,,why do u ask?Probably because he is wondering if the journels are worn.
nicmk1est Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 hope not ??),,,there was no signs of wear or marks on the journals-just bearings gone
Nick Jones Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Don't reckon they'll be too bad - I've seen MUCH worse bearings than that, replaced them and all has been well. Question I'd be asking is which one of those was causing a knock.....Nick
nicmk1est Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 most of the knock was at the front of engine, long screwdriver to ear,,soon as i heard it,,get full bearings
nicmk1est Posted September 12, 2012 Author Posted September 12, 2012 today has been a good day------first start after new full bearing installed,,,runs sssswwwweeeetttt,no horrid knocking, happy days are for now,,,mot next ;) thanks all for info and support(fuel and matches not used)
