1500 engine for 22 quid

Hello
May be a little premature but last night I won a 78 engine for 22 quid.
No history with it though as it was a spare engine bought with a car that has now been sold.
Anyway not bad for 22 quid me thinks. :)

would be nice, mines got a mk IV engine in though so its no different if i never find a small bearing engine. i dont know much about engine building, but if i was to do 'the usual' upgrades (whatever they may be) when doing an engine from scratch, would the bearing size still make a difference ?

The small bearing 1300s are supposed to be longer-lived and revvier than large bearing 1300s due to less bearing surface area. I've only ever driven a small-bearing 1300 so can't compare them, but my Herald's engine has done 70,000 miles without complaint and still surprises me with its peppy-ness.

collected engine today
seller said that the guy he got it off said that it did smoke a little and there was some rattling (timing chain probably)

Any how, engine appears to be rust free (stored under car port) and engine seems to have original paint in place.

Looked in rocker cover and can see some dried oil on rockers and plugs are in good condition but blackened with soot.
Besides that all looks in good condition. Strip down may reveal more issues when all clearances are mic'd but well worth £22 :)
Even threw in a spare alternator. He is selling a lovely 4 door mk2 escort - nice metalic blue

Thanks
