Stodders
Hi, A while back I fitted a spin on filter to my car. I thought that these were supposed to retain the oil and therefore reduce the time for the oil pressure to rise when starting from cold. It still took about 5 seconds though. Today I was doing an oil change, the car had been unused for a week and I drained it cold and noticed that when I undid the filter nothing came out. Is this because I am using the wrong filters (do they have valves in them)? or is it that I have the filter mounted at the wrong angle. I am attaching a photo of where it is and the type of filter. I can rotate the filter body so that it is at about 45 degrees below horizontal but this makes it trickier to remove. Any advice I would be most greatful Mike
glang
Many filters do have valves but even so its only a flap that reduces the oil drain flow and cant be relied on to stop the casing emptying itself over time. So the idea with this conversion is to mount the filter as vertical as possible ie hanging down and then it can retain more oil. It does mean that it ends up close to the chassis rail and is more difficult to change but the benefit is definitely quicker oil supply to the bearings on start up. Some people even buy shorter filters (theres quite a selection that will fit) to improve access and if youre not doing many miles per year but still change it regardless this could be an option...... Stodders
Thanks for the reply, that makes sense. I have looked at the filters that I have and they do have the flap type of seal but as the car is used infrequently the oil must be able to get past this. I have now moved the assembly round as far as it will go and still being able to clear the chassis and brake pipes (see photo) but would be able to get it round further with a shorter filter. Do you have any idea where I would be able to get hold of the short filters or what car they are intended for? Thanks Mike
glang
I believe the smallest that have been used are for a Reliant Robin and in the WIX catalogue the important characteristics match up but with a height of only 2.5". However if you look at the installation you now have (I assume you can just unscrew the filter as it is without rotating the assembly) it will remain pretty full and there'll be minimal pressure delay on start up..... Stodders
Thanks for your help. I'll see how it goes in the position it s now on an get the shorter one if there is little improvement.
daver clasper
Hi. I have fitted the shorter filter, which allows a steeper angle (will try find the info if you want), though I don't think it made any noticeable difference and was twice the price of my usual one. Even if the filter holds some oil, it is still the oil galleries that drain down. You could remove the dizzy king lead and crank over to prime the system, before starting. Cheers, Dave

Pete Lewis
why get woe full about drain back its only lasted 50 years without a problem just dont rev the nuts off as it fires just let idle and there you go spin on's are much less hassle to change than the canister originals as if you get the canister new seal in without chopping it , youre lucky. Rosbif
When I start mine when the weather is cold I don't pull the choke out straight away so as to allow pressure to build up. In warmer weather I do as Pete says and don't set off at full pelt.
