Spitfire1500
Dear Everyone,I have a Spitfire 1500 fitted with a Dolomite (DH Prefix) 1300 engine but has also been fitted with a pair of HS4 Carburettors which may be over-fueling.Does anyone have a spare Dolomite 1300 Inlet Manifold and Single Carburettor that I can bolt onto my engine block at all and for how much?I hope I have posted in the right place!Kind Regards,David
That Man
Hi David, What exhaust manifold do you have ? I'm pretty sure a single carb manifold will only fit with the right cast iron exhaust manifold :-/Gordon
Clive
I know they won't fit with the 1500 cast manifold, obviously will with the 1300 cast and I can see no reason at all why a tubular manifold will be an issue. ( I believe David has a tubular jobbie)
Spitfire1500
Dear Gordon & Clive,I have been offered some HS2 Carbs from The Scrapman, so these will be worth a go - but I will need to get the correct manifold for these as I doubt the HS4 is a bolt on to a HS2, but it saves playing around with needles.Regarding the Exhaust Manifold - I have a tubular one - the single Carb and Inlet Manifold would be perfect for my config but when I have looked around they seem to be as rare as Hens Teeth for the standard 1300 Dolomite Engines! Many thanks & Kind Regards,David
mark spit
Hi David,Why not seek out a pair of HS2s on manifold that would bolt straight on and look visually right for a Spitfire engine. If you do have a tubular manifold as Clive mentions, and HS4s then I'd imagine your 1300 would be breathing better and the HS4 shouldn't be a problem in themselves, if there is overfuelling, could it not be the carb setup or unsuitable needles fitted to the current carbs. What air filters do you run? Is the engine otherwise standard? Are the carbs in good condition? Setting the correct mixture at idle on worn out (usually air leaky spindles) carbs would most likely give rich running above idleI myself have HS4s on my 1300, though that has had a few other mods as well. I know of a local (to me) specialist who has fitted HS4s to otherwise pretty standard 1300 engines with only improvement to be had.YoursMark
thescrapman
Should have said, they are on a manifold.cheersColin
Spitfire1500
Dear Mark & Clive,Thank you for your replies, Colin has kindly offered me the Manifold & HS2 Carbs which I will be able to bolt on (and of course, look a bit more genuine!) on my Spitfire, rather than a single Carb & Manifold.I think a lot of it is over-fueling - due to Carb Set-up. I'm aiming to have a good go today at them, getting them running better and leaning off the mixture - but when I'm playing with them, I may well find that there are worn parts inside the HS4s. I'll be able to find out what needles I have as well when I look at them and check for air leaks, float level and linkages.I haven't looked at the Air Filters yet, that will also come when I take the Airbox off. The Seller didn't mention which Air Filters were fitted, so they are likely to be standard ones.I don't think there have been any other Engine mods.Kind Regards,David
