stag_ste
Hello Stag lovers...What is a good string diameter to use to get the windscreen seal over the lip of the aperture? My mate has suggested washing line to pull it over and inside the car, but i'm a bit hesitant to use such a thick string. Would it help to get it started across the bottom, maybe the line thickness would hold the seal apart for it to be placed over the lip to help starting the fitting??? I realise that the string has to be strong, but how thick for best results?Anyone got some advice ??
stag_ste
Well, a big thanks for all the replies - lol.Well, the conventional way worked fine using 3mm diameter nylon, the corners as usual were the hardest. But, doing it gently and 'palming' in the glass behind the lip curl over, worked very well. then when it was all in and done, very gentle tapping with a rubber mallet on the seal to seat the seal on the outside, and outward tapping on the rubber with the handle of the mallet to seat the inner lip.Took about 20 minutes from start to finish.Plenty of washing up liquid to lubricate too.... Camo
Well done, I have taken many windscreens out but not ever put one back !maybe one day I will need to do it as the price of auto glass labour gets higher...Stuart
bobble350
Hi stag-ste,I've got to refit the rear window into my hard top. I've been told that its not the easiest job to do! Is washing-up liquid the best lubricant? I know its not good for paint. Did you use any kind of sealant under the rubber afterwards? Mark.
tightfit
Hi I always use a good sray of domestic window cleaner (windolene) I have been told that washing up liquid promotes rusting. also I find that 5mm cord works and is not so bad on the hands. stag_ste
Washing up liquid is good for the rubber, and doesn't harm the actual paint, but does remove polish. A good clean after wards with plenty of water and re-apply polish would be fine. I didn't use any sealant at all.
Deleted User
The trouble with washing up liquid is that it contains a lot of salt.Do you really want to leave a highly salty compound in the windscreen apperture.Even after it has all dried out, the salt will still be present, and will get wet every time it rains (capilliary action) so there is always the potential to start rusting the metal that cannot be seen inside the rubber. Alex
I thought I'd heard that Kevin, but I checked the bottle in the kitchen and it didnt mention salt.Mentions lots of long words though so perhaps thats what one of them means?
wakaday
K Y Jelly.Water soluble and no salt. I have used it for windscreens and various hoses. Its great if you can get over the embarrassment of buying it.
