It can't go all the way up to the roof line as there would be some danger of it hitting the gutter, as mine has occasionally in the past. There is a small bracket that stops the 'scissors' on the winding mechanism from going too high and too low. That bracket is adjustable so get it close to the top but I'd leave about 1/4".
