Door Cappings - 'Colour'?

Morning all,
Away from the car for a few weeks but have a pile of [s]fire wood[/s] door cappings to work on.

From what I can tell there isn't a veneer, just solid wood (what's left flaking off the surface seems to be just clear varnish) but I can't tell if the wood is just varnished or is means to have any colour dye applied first.

The one I've tried so far seems to be much lighter but that could just be the fresh varnish vs. 30 years of sunlight/dirt/cigarette smoke/etc!

The inside of the glove box certainly seems to be a much darker colour than the outside of same.

Anyone know/what have you done to your cappings?

I'd find a colour you like and stain it, unless you like the lighter colour you've discovered under the old varnish. You will have a combination of the wood bleaching in the sun and the varnish yellowing with time on surfaces regularly exposed to light, making the door cappings lighter than the inside of the glovebox lid. Add to that the wood kept in the dark will tend to gain a darker "patina" with time and you have the decision of which colour to go with!

When you get to the putting varnish on stage, can I recommend Rustin's Plastic Coat? It gives a really good deep gloss finish and is really hard wearing (we've got it on the table in the front room where Tom does all his drawing and colouring and a seven year old hasn't managed to trash the surface yet!). It's pretty UV stable too and is very clear for a varnish coat.

Photo of mine - stripped back to the wood (veneer?), a horrible job, took ages, even Nitormors had limited effect on the old lacquer.

Used satin finish clear varnish - the dash is original, the match is far better than it appears in the picture.

Gotta love the 70's orangey interior.  Hated it at first but now makes modern black and grey cabins seem so dull!

Mikey B - paint colour is the lovely Sienna Brown - the cloth centres were optional apparently. Pictured here at the Anglesey national with suitable period surroundings!

Didn't know the door cappings were veneered, was lucky that only the lacquer had lifted - they still withstood quite a hammering with a scraper and coarse sandpaper.....

Brother will soon start work at Bentley in the wood trim department so maybe I can call in a favour and get them done properly

I just sanded the crappy-looking veneer off mine and used boat deck varnish to paint them up ... hardly what is supposed to be done I'm sure, but I think the wood looks better anyway, and the varnish I've used should withstand the mega-dose of UV it gets down under.
