Work crawled to a halt on my 75 spitfire what with real (paying) work and a girlfriend taking over my life. Luckily I no longer have the girlfriend to get in the way of me and my car!

So with that said I have most of the car stripped down. The original paint has been mostly removed except in the area in between the door and the body of the car. I want to remove the doors to paint them separately as well as to get to that area where my hands wont reach.

I bought a workshop manual on CD to use however the damm thing doesnt work and now I am stuck. I dont know how to remove the doors and I was hoping someone could explain it to me. I tried to remove the screws holding the door to the body which worked just fine but the arm that extends into the body I just cant figure out. How does one detach the arm from the door or from the body?

Thanks

Remove whatever is holding the door check strap to the door (plastic dome head rivet/nut & bolt or whatever).
If plastic rivet, simply push it out from bottom first (much easier to handle door). Then unscrew the 3 bolts on each hinge.
Push door check into the hole it sticks out of, but you have to remove A-post carpet/trim from inside to retrieve the door check strap.
Hope this makes sense. If I have misunderstood you, then forget everything I have just said ;D ;D

Cheers

Thanks for the fast reply, I really appreciate it.

I am not following what you mean by your instructions.

Here are some pictures to give a better idea of what I am dealing with. As far as I can tell there arent any plastic pieces. Everything is metal and there are no nuts or anything to unscrew so I am not sure how to remove the pin. Do I just need to get some pliers and squeeze the bottom of that pin so it slides through? If that is the case what happens when I put the door back? do you just hammer it flat again?

Hello
Your domed stud (rivet) has a dished retaining washer of some kind (that was not on mine)on the underside, so I could not say for sure how it is detached but if the washer will turn around the stud (rivet), then I would just use a punch and 'pop' the stud up & out and replace the washer on refit. Otherwise your 'hammer' option may need to be used. Hammer never fails :-/

I would probably fit new straps on refit (depending on how 'loose' yours were). Click link for idea

well been at it today trying to get that pin out and no success as of yet.

The problem is that although the manual says to drill the pin out there isnt enough space to get my drill under it to get the right angle. At this point I wonder if I should just cut the strap in half and just replace it.

Anyone else have a tip to remove the pin? Or for that matter how to cut the strap in half (I dont have a welding unit).

lavamatrix,
Patience and a sharp file will remove the head from the rivet. With luck a sharp cold chisel could cut the bottom from the rivet and release it. Or there is the possibility of using a small grinding stone in a portable drill to grind the rivet so it can be punched through. There is really only a very small amount of metal that must be removed to free the door.
                                                                                   Best of luck,
                                                                                   Paul
