Hi everyone,

just was hoping someone could help me, the two pics show the door shut of my mk4 spit on the drivers door. The passenger side shuts sweet, but as you can see the drivers side could do with a bit of adjustment and I was wondering how to do this? Ive looked at the catch system and the bit it catches on the body but cant see how you adjust it.

Thanks
Alex

the plate on the body, held in with 3 screws. undo the screws enough so they're loose, they dont need to come out. you should be able to shift the plate backwards, do the screws up and try again.

out of interest, with the door as it is in the picture, can you push the door any further in ? couple of weeks ago my door wouldnt shut properly, the catch is sort of 2 stage. the first stage my door would catch so i couldnt open it without pressing the button to open it (mk3 door handles different to yours), which left my door looking like yours. but i could push the door further in, it just wouldnt stay there. if you see what i mean. this was remedied by removing the mechanism on the door, liberalyl spraying it with wd40, cleaning out gunk with a cotton bud, and regreasing.

yes it sort of has 2 stages to the catch?

the picture is when it is fully catched, however the door does go further in if i push it so im gonna adjust it later and spray it up with some wd40, then the next job is to get the door lock mechanisms to work from the inside so the door trim is coming off lol!!

you only want to loosen the 3 screws just enough to take the pressure off the striker plate.  with the door handle open (so the door catch won't engage) push the door closed and this will push the striker plate into it's correct position.  Then just nip the screws a little so they just hold the striker.  test the door fit and repeat if required.  once happy with the fit tighten the striker plate screws

and so you have experienced the joys of the ease of working on our cars. personally, i find it takes a pretty serious/expensive problem before i stop enjoying fixing it. except the bellhousing bolts. god do i hate doing that tedious job.
