door skin folding tool

I just use a regular panel hammer and flat faced dolly. I start with the door face down on a workbench and gently work the flange around, then tighten it all up with the dolly against the outer face of the skin. Support it properly and you won;t cause any damage to the skin.

I bought one of the plier-type door skinning tools many years ago, it was a complete waste of money. It left the flange rippled, I had to go back over everything with the hammer and dolly once more, it slowed down the entire process,

Cheers,
Bill.

Couldn't agree with Bill more.  The annoying thing that I found was that despite all the hype over the special tool it still left marks on the FACE of the panel

The traditional method of hammer and dolly is the best, and of course you can use these for other jobs so your money is better used - use your money to buy really good tools and not the cheapest.

Hard if not impossible to reskin a door without marking the edges of the front face.  Herald and Vitesse doors aren't the easiest to strip, reskin and fit back up.

Happy days!

Yes but the number made with this tool were unacceptable - especially as when it was first introduced (when I bought one) it was lauded as not making marks on the front.  Using a dolly spreads the load on the face of the panel reducing the possibility of making marks and any made should be smaller (or so I have found).

I had success reskinning Mini doors using 2 old steel rules and molegrips. I used one ruler on the front and one on the back and squeezed using the molesgrips, working gradually round a bit at a time. It took about 3 goes round the door to get the lip fully down, and didn't leave any marks.

I agree.  I have used both methods and I would use a hammer and dolly every time!

While I worked for Audi/Volkswagen's panel shop in London the other panel beater and I used to see who could re-skin a door without taking it off the car, Renaults were the easiest and no filler either :P
We could do 90% of the fit on other makes then had to remove the door to finish it off :-/
It always ended with the least bog used and this seemed to be won by the Golfs.
I never want to see or fit another Jaguar door skin, or SD1 Rover front wing ever again :(
