andyc
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a Mk1 and a MK2 door
wakaday
The external door catches are the quickest way to tell. MK2 has a hook on the B post. MK1 has a locking plate.
Alex
So are they interchangeable like on mk1 and mk11 saloons?
andyc
Thanks for that. Are they reasonably straight forward to fit and line up? Is there anything to be wary of?
Alex
Dropping it on your foot! ;D
AlanChatterton
Yes they can be swapped. My MKII has one MKI door in it, just needed the MKII door funiture (locks internals etc) fitting into it.As far as the metalwork goes, I don't think there is a difference. Alex
I just looked at rimmers and the door skin is the same for both mk1 and mk11.
wakaday
The skins are the same. Its just the furnishings. You can change them but its not that straightforward. The MK2 has a recessed latch on the door and only has 2 fixings on its locking plate on the B Post. The MK1 door latch fits flush to the door and its locking plate has four fixings. DJT
I agree with wakaday. There is a lot of work to change the door frames from mk1 to mk2 or vice versa. Likewise the B-pillar requires considerable work.Nothing is impossible, but you would have to have a good reason, rather than buying the correct doors, of which there seems to be no shortage. Doorskins were actually different too as the opening for the door handles was different to accommodate the different mk1 & mk2 handles/mechanisms. However I believe this has been allowed for on current skins and they fit both marks.Dave
Alex
What if it was a cross over stag ie.stag mk1.5?(is that the right term?)Would it have mk1 or mk11 doors? How do you tell if you've got a mk1,mk1.5 or mk11?
Ballykine43
Mr Rimmer states " Mk 1 type doors were fitted up to BODY No T21833LD, Approx to end 1974"Brian

andyc
Thanks to everyone for their help and assistance, including Alex who may be helping me to fit it if I go ahead so get some steel toe caps to be on the safe side.I checked out the Rimmers catalogue, thanks Ballykine43 for the info.My Stag is body code T3780LD indicating 1974-5 bodyThe commission number is LD10363 indicating the car is early 1972 (which agrees with the registration details (Feb). From memory it sounds like I need a MK2 but my garage is in darkness at the moment so I will have to wait to check it out.Bit of a hybrid my car its got a Rover 3.5 lump in it as well. Ballykine43
Hello again AndyCommission number LD10363. My information is that the first car built in 1972 was LD10760, on 3rd January, so looks like you have quite an early Stag.My Stag is body code T3780LD indicating 1974-5 body Unless you have missed a digit I think this is also a 1971 numberMy info is from The Triumph Stag Register. The bit of interest states 1971 : Bonnet release moved from offside dash to nearside dash from T4284LD.We seem to be in a recession. Mark 11 then Mark 1.5, now Mark 1. I may have missed something but what got you thinking in this direction?Brian
andyc
Hi Brian,Well done for spotting the deliberate mistake. Now I have had a chance to look properly I am fairly confident that we are talking MK1 doors. Oh and the bonnet release is on the drivers side. Thanks againAndy

Yours is quite close to mine, which is LD10567, built on Dec 13th 1971. It wasn't registered, however, until 7th Feb 1972. The doors on mine are definitely Mk1.Dave
wakaday
The other easy way to find out which is which is by the door locking part on the end of the door. If it has white ish coloured plastic attached to it then its MK2. If its all Steel then its MK1.
andyc
Hi WakadayDefinitely all metal. All I need to do now is find a couple of decent Mk1 doors.
