ianb
When you close the doors of your pride and joy is there a deep muffled clunk or does it sound as if you've dropped your toolbox on the floor? Mine did!I hate squeaks and rattles, always have done. So I was determined to investigate where all the rattles were coming from.First thing I found straightaway when I removed the panels was quite a bit of debris lying on the bottom. Discarded nuts washers etc. Then the absence of anti rattle pads to keep the window linkages from knocking. There was also a number of rivets which had worn loose and in addition the rubber/felt inserts in the glass runners were badly worn and in some cases missing. The lock barrels were also worn and rattling. As a side issue I also found out why the windows were so hard to opertate, this was caused by the 30 odd year grease converting into a horrible sticky gunge.I stripped everthing down, thoroughly cleaned and relubricated, tightened up the rivets fitted new window seals and runners and new anti rattle pads. Then I ran a bead of araldite around the worn part on the lock barrel to build it up and sanded it down when set to acheive a snug fit. Finally I treated the doors to some sound deadening panels and Bob's your uncle! So do my doors now close with that elusive deep clunk? Well................er not exactly but a big improvement and my wife can now operate the windows.Keep on running.
Deleted User
Clatter, I should sort them but they both need reskinning.
Zendervision
I wouldn't call it a clunk, but mine close with a satisfying crash. However my garage shares a wall with the neighbours living room, so I don't close them when it's late ;D
Vitesse1965
My near side one flys open when I go around corners, unless I lock it! ;D
Nick Jones
Bit like wacking an empty tin dustbin with a spade...... not a quality sound. They do stay shut though - mostly.Nick
