Herald Convertible Doors

all mod cons

Recommended Posts

hi,
Does anybody know if the convertible and saloon doors are the same size?
I've just tried to fit a door which I'm sure is from a saloon, on to my 1965 convertible and I'm struggling!

It catches at the bottom of the non-hinge end of the door. However I can't move it 'forwards' any further as the quarterlight frame, at the top, is almost touching the windscreen surround.

It seems really tricky to get the adjustment right anyway. If anyone has any hints they'd be greatly appreciated.
If the salolon and convertible doors are different, then I've just wasted my time painting up this new door and might need consider getting my old doors reskinned!
Thanks,
Richard.

The door frames differ by year, but not by model. Overall dimensions never changed, any Herald door should fit any other Herald.
Has your replacement door been reskinned? Or had the one you've taken off? It's not uncommon for doors to be modified to cure a fit problem, I remember a particular Spitfire having a replacement door lengthened by 0.5" to fit the body, legacy of a previous owner's rebuild.
Cheers,
Bill.

i have convertable doors on my saloon, apart from changing the door glasses to saloon type, seem to fit ok. the quarterlights  was a bit tight but they were "persueded" to fit. maybe take the q/lights out  and get the door to fit first!!
regards,   bryan

(btw, they came off a '65 1200 and onto a '68 13/60)

You may need to alter the washers under the bodymounts to spraed the door opening at the top, there is one under the a post, one under the b postish and at the ends of the chassis siderail. You may be unlucky and have no bodymount left  :'( been there.......

Struggled with this all day yesterday - still can't get it to fit smoothly.
I reckon something somewhere has twisted.
The door now shuts securely but catches at the bottom and needs a good shove to shut and open it.
Far from ideal !  The passenger door fits fine,
Thanks for all you help guys.

I meant between the body and chassis. Ali washers can be fitted, anout 4mm thick? or just any large washers, ideally with the hole slotted to the edge of the washer so it can be fitted without undoing everything.
It is amazing how much attention some need!

Hello Clive,
Ah - I think I see what you mean now.
Sorry tp go on about this but I want to make sure I understand you correctly before I try anything....

So between the chassis and the body tub, beneeath the hingepost and further back are bolts running vertcally holding the chassis and body together. I need to loosen those and slide in a 4mm thick cut-open washer. This should cause the door frame to 'bend' open a bit more?
Thanks
Richard

Yep. It is possible to use almost anything as spacers, have a think about what you want, tip the bulkhead up at the back, or the rear tub up at the front etc. Be warned, it is very possible the bolts are seized, and they are not easy.
To check it the bodymount is badly rusted, you can open a door a bit and pull it up, see if the A post moves!
