Jason
Just had a call from a chap in Winchester who's clearing out his Dad's garage and needs to dispose of a pair of Herald doors, complete and in good condition. From his description they are saloon doors. They've been dry stored for yearsI haven't got any pictures or further details but if you're interested please call him, David Brown on 07913 486539 - he said he just wanted them to go to a good home but wouldn't mind a few quid for them if they were worth it. Camo
the doors are very good condition, almost as new, both bottoms are intact, few minor scabs of rust and a slight indent on one, far far better than the doors I had, one of which i can push my hand through at the bottom !3hr round trip well worth it, thanks again ...just need a good complete bonnet and front valance and she will be ready for the bodywork to start in ernest.Stuart
Jason
Excellent! Were they saloon door?
Camo
aye, they were saloon, I have taken the glass out of one, but also took out the whole winder mechanism, is there a way to change the glass without taking it all out ?, should I be trying to un-pop the rails out of the window as it seems rather hard to re attach them ? any advice is welcomed....Stuart
Ianp
you can unclip the mechanism from the rail on the bottom of the window (bit fiddly but can be done) so the window comes out with just the bottom rail on
Camo
wish i had known that before stripping it all down to component parts and then removing completely !! at least i only did one door :-/Stuart
Jason
LOL - I hate dismantling/reassembling doors - I'm convinced they put them together THEN put the skins on!
Camo
you may have a point there !I have managed to get 2 convertible windows with the purchase of another herald 1200 convertible that was last on the road in 1986, more details to follow, so at least I can rebuild the doors with windows without taking my original doors apart first, plus I now have a point of referance to work from, it all seems to be going great on the Herald front, another project coming and the doors and boot that are rust free, something has got to give soon, though I started a new job this week and its very involved and stressful compared to my old job, so I guess i just haven't really got time to play with Heralds at the moment...... just collecting bits Stuart
Jason
Collecting bits is the easy part!
Camo
ha ! actually the easy bit seems to be fitting the new windows in, the hard bit is refitting all the inner and outer trim, in fact its so hard I haven't done it, do you fit this before the window goes in or after? talk about fiddly, if you can get your fingers where they are ment to be and still have the items in your hand, there is no way you have the force with which to bed it in !!still I got alot done this weekend, 2 good doors now on, one in gunmetal, the other in wedgewood. Jason
Are you referring to the window rain seals? If so, fit the door glass then fit the seals - Rarebits do the proper tool for this and it's much easier with it :-)
heraldcoupe
Other than the special tool, disconnect the glass from the winder mechanism so that it can be dropped to the bottom of the door. This makes the inner strip a piece of cake to fit. The outer strip is always going to be a pain, particularly given the unavailability of the original pattern seal, but if you buy or make the correct tool it wil at least make the job do-able!Cheers,Bill. Camo
do you have one of these magical tools Bill ? don't really want to take the windows off the runner again if I can help it, could use the seal aswel, but can get my hands on one if needed.thanksStuart
heraldcoupe
Hi Stuart,My tool-making chap has been elusive of late, so no tools right now and not sure when I'll have more. I can send you a drawing if you want to make one - it's a lot easier to make the tool than to fit seals without one!Whatever you do, you will need to drop the glass of the lifting arms, it's simply not possible (to a mortal like me at least!) to fit the seals when the glass is in the way.I am waiting for a delivery of the preferred outer seals at the moment. There are several different grades of outer seal, I currently have two types in stock, which I describe as "absolutely impossible" and "incredibly difficult" respectively. The ones I'm waiting for are just "quite difficult", they should be here before the end of the week. Cheers,Bill.
Camo
a drawing of this tool would be greatly appreciated, I can get my hands on the seal as I have a door with a good new seal fitted, just not fitted to the door I want it fitted to !thanksStuart
