Einar
I’m just about to fit Halogen Headlights (for my Vitesse). It seems to be straight forward, however my question is whether there is a need to fit relay(s) to have the full benefits of this improvement? I honestly don’t have a clue, but I’ve heard that relays make additional lights to a car work properly. Anyone have any input.
coxy
If the halogens have a higher wattage than the old bulbs, the current through the wiring will be higher. This extra current can fry the existing wiring which wasn;t designed for a higher current. The relays are used to seperate NEW wiring used for the new lamps. The existing switches and wiring is used to switch the relays (and the new lights) on.
Einar
Thanks for explaining the purpose of fitting relays - pretty simple ;D The new halogen headlights were fitted rather easy - "easier than changing the bulbs"!
Pete Lewis
I always get into trouble with this but we run all 4 on dip (with relays) and she's just passed another MOT This exceeds the light regulations but very illuminating, with relays you get full 13.5 volts at the lamps not reduced by volt drop in the old wires and switches Peter
