Hello, I have a coupe, was a saloon, with a 1300 spitfire engine and twin SU's . I have a tubular exhaust manifold also. I am getting a bit fed up tweaking and Balancing the carbs. My question is will a standard stromberg and inlet manifold fit straight on? I want a car that I can use regularly with out constant fiddling. Just put in electronic dizzy . Any ideas for a simple life. Not looking for a racer, just a good set up that that works. Thanks :)

once set , and  balanced there should be no need to twiddle ,

a 13/60 with a single stromberg will fit Ok   there will be some twiddling to re design the throttle and chokes , , nothing difficult
if you need a longe cable use a push bike brake cable , twice as cheap twice as good.

Thanks for that, the twins were set up perfectly, and now they are spitting etc, now stripped. Hoping that all will be well once back on, but not holding breath. Single is much more appealing, no balancing, one mixture .....

Now to find the bits.

my experiance is that if set correctly and in good order then your carbs may stray a little but not massively, i would check to see you havnt got any missing washers etc that are supposed to prevent things rattling and self adjusting. Have used 4 carbs on a slightly more modern car for 7 years now and only need to tweek a little between really hot weather and freezing. but yes i also have a spitfire engine in my herald and it has a single stromberg on it at present but i have bought a twin SU setup :)

Depending one which tubular manifold you have the single stromberg inlet manifold may not fit, the problem is the angle at which the 2nd and 3rd primarys leave the head, I believe the single SU manifold has more clearance.

But as others have said if you have a problem with the carbs stay in balance there must be some underlying problem.

Kipping used to like a single 1 3/4" carb on a (presumably) dolly 1300 inlet manifold. However, john thomason used a single 1 1/2 SU on his "race" spitfire 1500 for daily use, and recorded (via rolling road data) little difference in power, and as it turned out, fuel consumption.

Are you sure you don't have an ignition problem?
Worn points that have opened or closed up will affect the timing and throw the tune out.
The twin HS2's on my Spitty stay in tune forever, like others have said.
