Camo Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 as the title suggests starting from cold my Vitesse runs fine while driving etc but when stopped at junctions it refuses to run and with the throttle left alone it will stall very quickly or if it doesn't stall when I pull away the carbs just fade then restart is a pain for a few seconds. I need to keep revving the car at junctions to keep it alive. It has got steadily worse over the last few weeks and is driving me crazy, once warmed slightly but with choke still required it is fine its just the early 5 mins of driving......any ideas ?it probably needs service parts as I done over 9k since the last tune up / service or is it Carb based problem ?thanksStuart
neilnaz Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Camo what carbs are you running on your Vitesse?neil
neilnaz Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 It sounds like the set-up of your choke to me. If my car was exhibiting such habits I would be looking at the choke set-up with the lost motion lever which should engage some throttle. It sounds like your set-up is not doing so. If you are running strombergs I wouldn'y have a clue how to adjust but I would imagine that it is the choke that is not doing as it should.Neil
Camo Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 Running twin strombergs as per standard, it does engage the throttle but only really evident when warmed when it revs at 1100 with choke on but before warmed slightly it just wants to stall..Stuart
neilnaz Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Well I have mine adjusted so that the choke, when the engine is cold, lets the car idle at 1500RPM. I gradually ease the choke off so that the idel stays above 1200RPM until the engine is warm and choke fully off. Sometimes I try and reduce choke too soon and I can tell immediately that the car is unhappy.I certainly could not leave the choke on full or even half when the engine is warm as the revs would be 3000+ (I imagine).I am sorry that I don't know about Strombergs and how to adjust the choke for perfect operation.best of luck, Neil
Camo Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 I have set the throttle to as high as you have suggested and initial tests from cold seems to have done the trick, no stalling and revved freely I will find out tomorrow morning on the way to work, thanks Neil..Stuart
Camo Posted March 6, 2007 Author Posted March 6, 2007 that was a much better experiance but still need to get the settings right..cheers for the helpStuart
Camo Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 really good this morning, I seem to have fixed the problem, as for diaphrams, I know there are some but never looked to see where...ignorance is blissStuart
Steve Cureton Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 check your spark plugs, and if they're Champions ditch them.
Pete Lewis Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 to access the diaphragms remove the 4 screws holding the dashpot top cover lift it off and there it is, careflly remove the slinky spring and lift out the damper and diaphragm, examine for splits, if its groan and baggy wash in petrol to return to size and refit with the small lug on the perifery in the relief of the housing this positions the piston, if its perforated replace it.this will not upset any setting, unless you have been trying to set the mixture with a holed diapragm in which case best to recentralize the jet and re adjust the mixture peter
