Buggered up carbs!

I stupidly let some kids play with my car (Scout group), and the throttle adjusting screw underneath has been tightened so much, when I tried to undo it, it took the rest of the unit with it.

Due to the fact that my car has HS6 carbs fitted it means that I can't get the relevant sizes of spanners on to undo them, so what should I do?
Take the unite out of the bottom of the carbs completely, strip them on the bench then put them back in the car?

Or would it be more straight forward to get some reconditioned carbs from Andy Turner etc?

The problem with that would be that I'd have to get them set up professionally I guess?

Any help?

I would start with that method.

Oh the pain of altruism   :X

I've put a set of Andrew Turner carbs on my S and I have to say I'm very impressed with them.

Beautiful job he did on them, and I didn't think it was a bad price, he will usually take your old carbs in p/ex too, which saves some money!

Hello J.J.,

do you mean the mixture adjusting screw, as the throttle adjusting screw is not underneath. It sounds as if the jet securing screw has come away with the mixture adjusting screw.
You should be able to split them and refit quite easil. You will need to recentre the jet of course. A good starting point is to then set the mixture adjusting screw two full turns down from the jet being flush with the bridge.

You shouldn't need to have them set up professionally, S.U.'s are very easy to work on and tune. If you are not familiar with them, read up in the workshop manual or an S.U. manual how it's done.

Did it improve the taste of the coffee?

On a more sensible note completely agree with PI man

Take the offending SU off and strip it on the bench if needed but no need to replace- similar thing happened to me went I went to adjust the mxture on my sprint once adjusting nut soild pain in the arse to  sort whilst on the car so whipped them off and sorted on the bench

Right, yes, I unbuggered the carbs by a slight strip down and re-do job, no new parts needed at all.

The Scouts did, by and large, get their mechanics badges, a few struggled with the principles of "Shut up and listen" and "Don't stick your fingers in that, it's harder and moves faster than you." Most of them had great fun with it, and a few had fun doing the 'wheel changing" competiton, although that paticular activity wasn't undertaken on my Vitesse. I pulled a beam axle off an old Fiesta for that one.

JJ's got it figured out!
A quick & inexpensive trip to one of those custom embroidery kiosks in the mall, & you've got:

Leg extension brake-bleeding assistance merit badge
Holding up the differential for R&R merit badge
Hanging on upside down under the bonnet to find the rattle at 60 mph merit badge
