This may sound like a strange question... but how are the door locks meant to work on a stag?

I can't see any rhyme or reason to the way the handles behave in mine.

On the outside we have the lock and the handle.
Inside a short handle (for the lock?) and the long handle (for opening the door?).

Operating the outside lock doesn't do anything. The two inside handles seem to move together most of the time and either of them will cause the door to open. Sometimes, but not always, the smaller handle on the inside locks the door so that the outside handle doesn't do anything.

Basically, I think this has all been ballsed up by the PO. I am not too worried about being able to fix it, but it would help to know how it is meant to work when in a state of good and correct repair.

Can anyone give me a potted account of this?

Jason the 2 next to each other in the car,big one opens car(pull towards you),push the small one towards door(away from you) to lock,obviously locking only applies to passenger side,but saves you a trip round the car when you get out.Also gives a little less stress on key as some of the lock mechanisms are tight to undo and the key can be prone to snap.

Sometimes, but not always, the smaller handle on the inside locks the door so that the outside handle doesn't do anything.  The smaller one, as Nibby has already said, should ALWAYS lock the door.  Both the key locking barrel and the short lever lock the door by creating a break in the linkage to the lock, so thet there is no way to activate it.  Mk 1 and early Mk2 have a single operating rod from the internal handles. Mk 2 has a double rod system. Internal handles look the same but are quite different should you need to replace one. They are not complicated in operation but do rely on several nylon connectors near the lock. These can be dislodged or fracture but are available from the usual suppliers.  The single operating lever on the Mk1 has a spring loaded toggle at the end which can also come adrift.  Door can then still be opened from inside, but not locked.
