Herald Door Striker Plate Seal

Does anyone know if the door striker plate seal shown as item 53 part No 610137 on the attached parts diagram and (NO LONGER AVAILABLE ) is necessary.http://www.canleyclassics.com/images/diagrams/herald1360_plate_av.jpg

This one has always puzzled me, I've taken apart numerous Heralds without observing a seal behind the striker plate. There is often a layer of Dum-Dum or similar, I have wondered whether the seal is actually a shaped putty rather than a rubber or card gasket. Otherwise it may be an early feature which was subsequently deleted but not reflected in the parts list.

Actually when I stripped the car I seem to remember their being some sort of BLACK Putty on the mating surface.

Never seen one.  Certainly my Vitesse has managed without for the last 24 years....
