Spitfire valance brackets

Can anyone take a look and see which way up the brackets go that hold the valances on.
Its the ones on the hinge boxes.....I need to know which way they should slide do the valances go up and down on the hinge box or in and out.......does that make sense?

I cant get my valance to fit without either touching the bonnet or the hinge box......I know it did before......

I hope you can see enough detail in the picture, elongated vertical holes to the valance and hoizontal holes to the chassis.  

They fitted before I started dismantling! cheers.

I'm going to try a different approach and fit the big bracket first.

Next question......why wont my lights fit the holes in one of the valances? are they handed?
I'm thinking not but cant see how else the O/S would have fitted.....I bought the valances used(metal and rust free) but the holes are out of line to what the indicator unit requires.

Its starting to look finished now......still lots of little jobs that I keep finding,need to write a list and start crossing things off.
