stevsy Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 hi all in the process of replacing my spitfire mk2 rear valance have brought a replacment panel seems to be to small width ways compared to original panel ive got 120cm original panel and 119cm replacment im wonder if any body could conferm there original valance width is 120cm and anybody know what width the steelcraft or bh panels are thats on the flat between the lips any help would be great
JensH Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 How does your replacement panel look like? Is it supplied with the reinforcement bracket behind the lock? If so, they are excellent reproductions of the original ones, and my guess would be your car had a rear impact in its former life?
mikeyb Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Sorry to confuse, just measured my MK3 - looks like 119.5cm! I don't think my valance is original though.Colin ("scrapman" on here) has an original Mk3, worth asking him to have a measure up
Saltddirk Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 You could PM Shaun (aka Sheepy),He is in process of dismantling my Mk2 and in the lot of panels that came with the car is a Rear valance of unknown origin. He could measure it up for you if you ask him nice enough.Since the other panels that came with the car are Steelcraft I took no risk and ordered a new one from HeritageDirk
stevsy Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 thanks for help mike looks like panel size is all over the place, the spitfire has had drivers side rear impact damage at some point in its life when removing rear wing had been cut and brazed back and rear deck had been filled on that side ive replaced both rear wings and now removed boot floor and rear valance right hand leg and wing seem to be out by around 10mm mesuring from inner arch across left to right i can take up 10mm by pulling in the inner wings i thing but add the 10 mm short valance to the eqation i have a 20mm gap that i wont be able to fix the rear panel i have came of ebay ive no idea of make looks old as has some rust on it have asked a guy selling a steelcraft panel he states its 119cm so no point in buying that if i cant get a panel closer to 120cm may have to massacre the rear valance i have, steve
Richard B Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Just make sure the boot lid fits neat and with even gaps down the sides.
stevsy Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 hi boot lid is spot on down the sides needs replacing as well though due to rust along the bottom edge anybody have a mk1,2,3 boot lid thats any good let me know, steve
JensH Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 New rear valences are good quality repros; newer had any problems with those. Older ones crap IMHO...Some pictures on my blog here: http://thetriumphanimal.blogspot.com/Scroll down to ... 2008 for a spitfire mk 3Some pictures from a gt6+ (mk2) too, from 2010 and 2011.Will take some measures tonight.
stevsy Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 hi some good work going on there my mk2 was not quite as bad rust wise i have so far replaced both floor pans both iner/outer sills ,a and b posts both sides, door skins one to go yet ,both rear wings plus one outer arch, working on boot floor and valance last to be done is the bonnet looks like driver wing and d plates, ive heard the old panels were not made well thought i would get away with spending £50 instead of over £100 on the rear valance, steve
Sheepy Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hi stevsy, & Dirk,I've just nipped out to the garage and measures the rear panel on the car and the replacement panel of unknown manufacture (no stickers on it)Anyway from flange to flange, it is 119.3 (give or take 1mm) on both the panels, and the one on the car looks original.Hope that helpsCheersShaun
stevsy Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 hi shaun thanks mate looks like there all around the 119cm mark then my be my original panel has been nere a panel beater some time in its life well ive now got to try and close the 20mm gap between wing and valance broberbly a very large ratchet strap across the wings or letting some steel into the valance, steve
JensH Posted January 27, 2012 Posted January 27, 2012 Did 4 x measures yesterday evening - all had 47'' = 119,4 cm.One was original spit mk 3, 3 was new repro panels bought from Paddock. Alle the same.
