BigT-DK Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I am about to refit the chrome trim to on my bootlid and rear wing edges on my MKII..My chrome has been filled with some sort of black "gunk" (looks like a sealer) - which I have scraped out... should this be there ? I was thinking of applying some clear dinitrol or similar instead before fitting..There was a reference to trim fitting without clips a few blogs ago can anyone elaborate?
Clive Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I suspect the clipless fitting used a sealant I suspect, something like a PU type. Advantage is that no clips=no scrapes in th epaint so hopefully no rust. Downside is that pu stuff REALLY sticks, so maybe something less strong is used (silicone?) which may allow it to come apart at a later date if required. The trims seem to get a fair bit of muck in them, filling with sealant should prevent that
AlanChatterton Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I fitted all the chrome trims to my car using clear silicone. Originally they used metal clips (they will be stuck inside the trim, hidden by the black gunk) and the black gunky stuff. When it rains, you get black streaks from this and it looks crap!!Clear it all out, fill the trim with clear silicone, fit and use a couple of pieces of masking tape to hold whilst it dries. They will not fall off, look perfect, and more importantly, no water can get anywhere to start rusting stuff.I learnt this trick off Mike Weaver, and I think we can all agree he knows what he is talking about!!
wild bill Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Yep,got to agree.Did the "moustaches" on the mini with silicone-perfect!.
BigT-DK Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Yes still have the clips also..I was worried that using silicone would make them impossible to remove at a later date..For now I will remove the black gunk entirely..what a crap job :-/ thanks for input.. will post picture when fitted up for all you polishers!
wild bill Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Removing the trims again is easy-----Dental floss!! Works a treat! Good luck.
