Hi guys,

Any suggestions on where to go to get the bumpers rechromed on my mk3 spit?  I am based on the Lincolnshire / Cambs border between Stamford and Peterborough and have tries Peterborough plating - £50 per foot lenght! and SB Products - £125 per bumper

What sort of price is typical/reasonable?

Cheers,

Well a new one will set you back £240 http://www.canleyclassics.com/catalogue_findapart.asp?partnumber=811660 (other suppliers are available (Rimmers is £265 plus £59 surcharge) but I bet you they get them all from Canleys.
So unless yours is really straight and not too pitted you're probably better off with a new one but be warned, modern chroming isn't half as good as the old stuff unless you want to pay serious money to have it plated several times. To be honest, £125 sounds cheap to me.

The secret to chrome plating is copper plating, the copper is used as a sort of primer for the nickle. Modern day platers only use the minimum amount of copper this means that the crome breaks away easily. A well plated item can be hit and bent without breaking away. Problem is, how do you know the plater has used enough copper. Only time and use tells.

Thanks guys. i'll check out both the places in peterborough and see if they give me a warm feeling.  might even try some elbow grease on the front one - any recommendations on chrome polish?

I've always used Autosol but just lately I've been using Peek - both seem a little aggressive for really good chrome - mine isn't :-)

Hi there, have you tried Ken Munford 0208 998 1626. HE does good decent chroming although not concours. He charged me £50.00 for 2 x rear rechromed bumpers (not exchange) and will charge £125.00 for the front bumper exchange. Postal service is also very reasonable.

Hello all,

just a little point as to why plating is expensive. Replating involves removing the old plate electrically, the base metal then has to be polished to a mirror finish before any plating is done which is where the time and expense builds up. Dents need attention, scratches need linishing etc. I have bought new plated items and won't buy any more, I'll find a plater with a good reputation instead.
