Karl Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 Hi there,Does someone know how to detach the "TRIUMPH" letters on the bonnet of my Herald 13/60 so I can properly polish it, and stick them back on again afterwards? They seem to be fixed from below with a clear-ish rubber cap - which I could probably just rip off, but then I'd have to source new ones.Any clues greatly appreciated!Karl
Richard B Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 You should be able to get the replacement rubber caps from the usual suppliers. They just push on from behind.
heraldcoupe Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 There are little plastic bushes pushed into holes in the panel. The badges push in from the front, expanding the bushes as they go. I wouldn't recommend re-using your bushes, the badges are likely to be a loose fit once they have been removed and re-inserted.New bushes are readily available.Cheers,Bill.
lordleonusa Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 The original bushes were black plastic and should fit into the holes from 'outside' the bonnet.ISTR that the bushes are put onto the letters' studs, then pushed into the holes in the bonnet? It's been years since I did that on my carsMaybe Bill, (yes that Bill :) ) can confirm?L
herald948 Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 I agree with Bill that it's probably best to replace the bushes if there is any doubt of their holding the letters (or badges). I find that the easiest way to remove the letters or badges is to find a small punch/drift about the size of the post, and then very gently and alternately tap on the posts until you drive them far enough to pull the letter from the top.

The bushes MUST be pushed into the panel first. The bush is expanded by the insertion of the badge-pin, which tightens it in it's locating hole. If you apply the buch to the pin first, the bush will be too large to fit the hole in the panel. On a side note, earlier cars used a metal badge retainer applied from the rear of the panel. In these cases, the panel holes are smaller as they do not need to accomodate the larger diameter of the plastic bushes.Cheers,Bill.
