Restoring chrome bumpers & other shiny bits

1967 MkIII

Hi All

I just bought a 1967 Spitfire from a chap in Worcestershire and drove her down to Luxembourg last weekend in the best weather so far this year… great start  8)

All I want to do for now is clean up the chrome parts as they have a sort of crust on them, rust I imagine. Are there any ways to get these looking better with some loving DIY? A youtube video suggested steel wool but surely that will scratch it?

I also need to change the headlamps to get the correct right/left beams so i'm thinking i might as well upgrade to halogen. Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks!

You can clean the chrome with SOFT wire wool, like brillo pads, then wax them thoroughly, that will help.

Steel is softer than chromnium, it won't scratch it.

Replace headlamps with those from Cibié, well worth the cost.

The US cars used sealed beam headlights, so almost everyone has had halogens since they superseded tungsten incandescent sealed beams in the parts stores some years ago.

Thanks for your replies.

lordleonusa - soft steel wool makes more sense, thanks. Normal turtle wax or specific for chrome?

Fizzy - thanks, i like the colour but don't know its name. its supposed to be the original but i have my doubts... i plan to treat the rust and respray in the same colour over the winter.

happy driving :)
