Look at the battery !

What car ?
What year is the car ?
Has it got a dynamo or an alternator ?

Once you have answered some or all the above,I am sure someone will be able to help you !!!

If you don't have a battery fitted, but you have an alternator then its NEG earth
If you have a dynamo then it could be either, but a bit more info is needed

If you have no battery fitted, the battery terminals are different sizes assuming you have round terminals. not sure which is bigger right now.

IF a radio is fitted and IF it has the polarity marked upon it, this is a reliable guide to the polarity of the car.

Coils are marked with polarity but there is no guarantee that they have been wired in correctly as they will work the wrong way around.

Car radios don't.
