Tinkerer
Anyone else having a problem with poor quality choke cables, we've been through about 4 in two years, the alloy parts appear to be made of cream cheese rather than metal. I grew up on cars with manual chokes so its not a user issue. Fed up with spending money on them I sourced one (ebay) from the lovely 1980's Triumph Acclaim aka Honda Acclaim I believe. This is a rachet type mechanism so no more twist-lock and it has a warning light switch. You need to cut off the ends to fit the carb end and shorten the whole thing by about 300mm, cut off the 2 bullet connectors and crimp on two 6mm male spade items and drill out the dash bracket a little. It also has a useful figure of 8 wire clip that allows a slight bend to be formed just above the carbsResult, perfect choke setting and it feels a lot more substantial than the standard type. nick1
I had one brake at the knob end recently. I got it used with some SU carbs I bought so I have no idea how old it was. Replaced it with one from Rimmer. I'll see how long that one goes. Also had an accelerator cable break. Replaced it with a Rimmer. Now the throttle action is unacceptably ratchetey. Those cables are rubbish. I have to come up with a fix for it.
Tinkerer
Hi,Had choke cables from Rimmers and Robsport neither have lasted, I suspect they come from the same source.Finished the choke cable swap today, much nicer and more accurate to set and the dash light works. Found out today that the 12 month old flexi carb mounts have broken again, not bad three sets in three years and a massive 2000 miles.I've heard about some alloy mounts but cant find a current supplier, was some Dolomite guy. Luckily I have a set of parts to do or not a 16V conversion and have just found that the original material mounts are A1 and an awful lot thinner than the aftermarket items. (thats tomorrow morning accounted for)I was tempted to go to speedy cables, they can do any cable any end. Send them your old as a template. I used them several times in the past and always received good quality items. They used to be in North London but now in Wales.
Beans
Warning thread drift :P6944 wrote: ... I know that feeling, in my case they also lasted less then a year. I didn't try another aftermarket set but collected a few original second hand sets.To extend their life I used some sturdy cable ties to take up some of the load ...Needless to say that cured the problem. But I hate them to fall of in some remote spot high up on a mountain. That's why I replicated the original pattern in aluminium (see this thread: Sorry , link no longer available)Another possibility could be this suggestion ...AndyF wrote: ... just been reading your blog and wondered if you could not use the TR3 insulating blocks? You would have to use longer screws and have about 10mm space between carbs and wing but they might just work.Take a look at number 158 on http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=2107 ... I have to come up with a fix for it.I had the same problem with my Spitfire, bought a new cable and the first week i was driving i sometimes needed to press the throttle hard and sometimes not (so then it revved up high ! ).Bought another cable (from paddocks) and even i didn't fit it as it was the same way, i could feel it straight away !So got to a bicycle shop, bought a cable, outer sleeve & some connectors (they said they sold a lot to Bedford owners in the 70's !) .It's been working nice and smooth since then.Don't know if you can do the same on a TR7, but worth a try ! :)
Tinkerer
Will checkout the TR3 blocks. Will try some cable ties and maybe whizzing up some sort of additional support bracket.Very nice Spitfire Wimpus
