herald65
Hello all,I know this is a fairly common conversion so there will hopefully be an answer out there somewhere. I'm currently just finishing the little jobs on the conversion, the choke cable being one of them. The standard herald 1200 choke is far too short to reach the spitfire carbs (twin SUs 8)). After looking at some photos online I was thinking a 130/60 choke would do the trick, but I don't want to shell out more money for it to be wrong. There is also the issue with the knob, the 13/60 has a different knob? Is there a choke cable I can get that doesn't have the knob fitted? Also I managed to make quite a good bodge on a Spitfire throttle cable, however it took a while. For future reference is there also one more suited for this?CheersAndy
Simoneg
Not sure about Spitfire carbs but my mods for essentially similar 1500 Dolly twin SUs in a Herald might be useful - see msg 2 July 2012 at Sorry , link no longer available. As I recall, the standard Herald 1360 accelerator and choke cables fitted this set up fine. Even used the Dolly choke warning light switch, mounted on the cable knob assembly behind the dash (although it soon went out of adjustment). herald65
Cheers for that Simon.Do 13/60 choke cables only come with the 'T' piece fitting and can it be removed? Only I would rather have the herald type knob on it.Andy
Paudman
On the underside of the knob there may - may, depending on the age and the manufacturer - be a small indent; press this in with a small screwdriver or punch and the knob will slide off; not very easily if it’s old and has been on there for years. Be careful not to break it, but it will eventually come off. You’ll have to hope your new cable has the same kind of dashboard-end shape or fitment to take the old T knob; if not some adaption will be required. But like mentioned above, there should be a little tab on both the older type & 13/60 knobs. It might be worth checking if Vitesse 1600 knobs have longer cables. garyf
I always thought the choke cables and knobs where moulded together on the 13/60 and Mk2 Vitesse's?The other knobs for Lights, heater and air distribution are removable I reckon. ferny
Modern choke cables are moulded, don't know about the others. Originally they had a pin you depressed to remove the plastic know.
Einar
I fitted this one to my Vitesse: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-401900__1Bought a separate knob that fit to the cable: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-704873This will probably also fit and is correct for 13/60: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-143136Yes, this solution was more expensive but the knob was correct. I do not know the length, but it was long enough and I had to cut it. I have twin SU6.
Goody
My blue resto project now has duel SU's. None of the cables were long enough for the choke. Got a New cable from Rimmers. Long enough and the correct looking knob for a 1200. However it is molded on and their is no choke decal in the center. Anyone got a cecal for a choke? Or know where I can get one. I first order the same, and asked/searched for a decal – did not succeed. That’s the reason I went for the above (more expensive) cable with separate knob – with decal. Dogsbody47uk
Hi Anderoo. Try Vehicle Wiring products item A420 Universal choke cable. It may be what you are looking for. Cheers, Dave.
