dolph
Can anyone help please...After having rebuilt the top end of me 1500tc engine, which worked prior to taking it apart, it no longer fires up. I have checked valves, timing, fuel, air and spark and all are correct. I took it apart again and checked the new head gasket i had put on and on the underside there is a slight blackening between cylinders 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. On inspecting the top of the engine block you can see a dip in the metal (see picture) between the afore mentioned cylinders. Compression is way down at around 32psi ! It ran ok before making me think that maybe a thicker gasket had been used taking up this inperfection in the top of the block. My question is do these oversized gaskets exist?? any advice welcome and appreciated. many thanks,
trackerjack
My 1500 Dolomite suffered instant head gasket failure like yours too, I just used another one, but I have never seen a step like your photo shows though.

GT6DavidMK1
later 1500 Dolomites do have recessed blocks, so your car must have had a engine change at one time? you need to order a recessed head gasket, a payen gasket ;) not one of those cheap repro's :(David. C Mallock
My car badged as 1500tc has a YC engine which is a resessed block.Use a decent head gasket as failures are common with cheaper ones as said by GT6David.Mine went 150 miles from home and it was a very long journey back
Toledo Man
Chaz, your's ain't a 1500TC. If you can cast your mind back to when we were at Daventry (seems a world away now...) I discovered that it was a Dolly 1500 as it was on an R plate, had a flat dash and started life as square headlights. Therefore your's is the right engine. The commission number was right for a Dolly 1500 as well.I'll bow to your superior experience on the head gasket. I'd certainly use a decent one myself if I needed one. I've not had any fail on any of my Triumphs up to now.

I have ordered a recessed block head gasket and will hopefully get round to fitting it soon.
