Compression test

Radders

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm sure this has been covered on here before, but I can't find it. I'm doing a compression test tonight on my 2.5 estate so I can try and establish whether the engine is b*ggered or not after it got a bit hot over Christmas.

What sort of readings should I be looking for?

Thanking you in advance.  :)

Hello Radders,

as little as possible with regards to cylinder to cylinder variation. Mine seems to give about 150 psi, but I'm sure there will be a variation depending on gauges.(I.e. accuracy).  It might be worth doing a quick tappet clearance check first.

I would say anything fom 120-150ish, but more important that actual figures are that they are even, and then do a wet test (teaspoon of oil down the bores) which should see similar gains in compression over all cylinders. I di mine with all plugs out as it is easier on the starter, plus you want the throttle fully open.

hello again. The compression test did not make good reading at all I'm afraid. We also discovered the engne has a knocking noise at the lower front of the engine. I was fearing the worst to be honest as this engine did seize up for a little while when it got really hot. I was kind of hoping I'd got away with, but obviously I haven't.  :(

looks like I'n in the market for another engine! :-/  Might as well do the manual conversion while I'm at it! ;D

A "knocking sound from the front of the engine" is irrelevant as far as compression tests go.
New bearings and Bob's yer Auntie!
Well, if you're lucky the mains and big end journals may not be damaged or too worn for a set of bearings to do the job.

You say it "didn't make good reading".  Well, neither does the telephone book, but it's still useful.   What DID you find?

What were the figures like? If really stuck the guy who had that MK1 estate also has a 2.5 engine he was going to put in it-you should have the number. Plus he is around this weekend ;)

No.6 was really low and the plug looked liked it hadn't even been firing. Strange though, it was running on all 6 cylinders???

I'll give that guy a ring tomorrow about the engine. Cheers! :)

As another thought, it may well be something like piston rings (if no 6 CR increased up to the same as the others on the we test this would be a good indicator)...They are not too expensive, and a set of new decent bearings, plus gaskets=£100 approx. May not be a bad idea, once refreshed like this the engines are often good for 50k and often more ;)
