fastblatt
I did a compression test on the 2000 engine yesterday and the results are in1 = 160 2 = 132 3 = 160 4 = 120 5 = 133 6 = 135Now I know the manuals recommend no more than 5psi between cylinders but the 160 seems extreme. Is that where it should be or is the @ 130 more realistic?ThanksMark
Nick Jones
Was that done warm with the throttle wide open?Comparison is usually more useful that absolute figures. 160 - 120 is too much difference though. TRy a wet test and see if they even up. Also worth checking valve clearances as they can make a surprisingly big difference.Nick
fastblatt
Thanks Nick. It was Warm with the throttle wide open and I have done the valves not long ago. I know not all gauges are not the same but what rough figure should I be looking for?Mark
DougBGT6
All 160 is good, all 120 is OK but some 160 and some 120 is not good. Do a wet test as suggested. :)
Nick Jones
My Vitesse is usually 160 - 170psi and my PI was 185 - 190psi with the new engine. Would think something similar to the Vitesse figures but consistency is most important.Nick
GT6 M
And heres me going to doo an engine build cos im doon to 210-220,!!!Butt, it may not be rings, but ex valves getting burn oot / pittedcompression test are ok for a quick check, but best to see where the gauge jumps to on first comp stroke, and not after where its at after 10 or moer turns of starter. As the engine when running only gets one chance to compress an firetry a running test, at idle, and see where its at,, re set gauge and see where it sitsany thing aboot 120 is goodowt less is dodgey, but yours is already doon, so maybe look for 100.but as yer original test, its to see where all cyls are actually at.M
fastblatt
Ok. Great. Thanks. I was having a think about it. Seems odd that the back three are that much lower but I dont think the carbs were right. I have reset them so Ill try again. I have had a missfire for some time so suspect a cylinder and that is probably No. 2. didnt want to pull the head but maybe I should get on with it instead of putting it off. Thanks for your input chaps.
