Mj17
Are there any standard tricks to removing the water pump from the V8?I've removed the 3 bolts (well 2.5 of them - half of one is still in the block) but it doesn't seem inclined to moving. Richard B
The aluminium cover should prise off, only the 3 bolts that hold it in. You might need a slide hammer to remove the pump (screwed into the top of the pump.
Mj17
"...prise off..." humm, it was standing up quite well to hammering a chisel in to the joint! There are signs of some gunk or other so think it may have been given some hard-core leak protection the last time it was re-built (which is meant to have been 3,000 miles ago).It looks like I'm in to a full rebuild though - somehow the RHS timing chain has been rubbing against the metal strips on the inside of the rocker cover. Metal fragments weren't really what I wanted to find mixed in the timing chain...
Richard B
Crowbar under the pipe stub? 'course if you break it those covers cost a &*%$ing fortune.PS There is a lip on the cover that protrudes about 1/4'' down into the block to seat/locate the cover. mikeyb
yeah that will be your problem - the bit inside the block will have corroded to the block - goes in about 1cm if I recall (see black arrow on diagram)- I always clean up with emery and copperslip before refitting to prevent future problems. The way to free them off is to squirt plenty of release oil under the lip and try and rotate it in position to break the corrosion - hindered by your broken off bolt! Then with a couple of small pry bars on opposite sides you can wiggle it up. The trouble is that the corrosion has made it a tight fit in the hole (bit like a UJ cap) - if you don't lever it out straight it will jam in the hole!If the worst comes to it and you bugger the cover, they're not as dear as you think - but bear in mind it will have to match your pump - ie 6 or 12 vane. IncaSpit
Thats how I removed the pump on an 1850 Dol. A LH threaded bolt welded onto a slide hammer fitting and screwed into the pump. It came out with only a couple of taps.
