Spitfire1500
Hi everyone,Just a quick question. I was wondering if any of you can advise on the type of water pump I might have installed?I'm going to a motorist parts centre tonight to pick one up but I am not quite sure what water pump I am to go for. I'm thinking it's a non-viscous type fan as Neilnaz has suggested but don't want to waste the trouble I'm going to to get to this particular place and finding I have bought the wrong part.My fan runs constantly, it doesn't suddenly kick into action - although that could be a faulty sensor that is causing that, as my 1500 was first registered in August 1980 and manufactured around that time.I have attached a picture of my thermostat assembly (it's the earlier one) but I am a little clueless about my fan assembly! It seems my fan has a lot of fins on it...so I may have the viscous type fan. Thanks,David
neilnaz
David we need to see the front or at least side on to see the water pump to identify it.Cheers, Neil
Spitfire1500
Thanks for the help so far,Have the following pictures:Which may help,Thanks,David
neilnaz
Well the water pump looks like a standard one looking at your picture. The fan looks like one that is normally installed on the viscous set-up. ::)Neil
neilnaz
Actually, does it matter which one you have got? You should put a standard one on anyway and get rid of the viscous one. They are sh*&e!! The only issue you then might have is the plastic fan might not transfer onto your new water pump.Neil
Spitfire1500
Cheers again,I think based on the drawings/diagrams above and this picture, I have a viscous type fan. Thanks,David

That's how lucky I normally am!Thanks,David
neilnaz
David, now you know what are you replacing it with? I am not sure anyone supplies a viscous fan anymore and you don't want one. The point is you are changing the water pump onto which a fan is mounted. It is either fixed or viscous coupled. The water pump is knackered so you need to change it. I think the only option is a standard water pump (I could be wrong and I have not checked). The next question is whether you can mount your fan onto a standard water pump. You want part number GWP128. I would not have a viscous fan water pump on my car.neil
Clive
If it is making a nasty noise it is prbably the viscous coupling that is knacked. It is seperate to the water pump. So if you buy a viscous water pump it may well not solve anything!I would suggest the standard spit pump with the matching fanblade. The fans should be cheap s/h, but need some little rubber bushes and stuff( not shown on diagram above, so I might be confused), normally still on a s/h one. Ask on here, if I had one it would be yours for postage! But I haven't, so sorry!

Still readily available, every time someone has tried to order one from us I have managed to talk them out of it! Cheers,Bill.
Spitfire1500
Hey everyone,I think I will be getting the earlier fixed fan water pump along with fan blades and bolts tonight (hopefully they'll stock those as well) I could ring them, but the payphone already ate 60p of my money! The fact I could hear the pump flowing probably discounts the water pump, but I suppose I should replace it as a matter of course with the earlier fan blades and 4 bolts. Thanks everyone,David
Spitfire1500
Hey everyone,Well, the company I was going to get the water pump from don't have any fan blades or bolts in stock.Since the MoT is tomorrow and I don't have any other option (besides ordering from a web site) I will probably have to leave this for now. How annoying.David
ferny
Will the metal fan off a 13/60 fit? If so you can borrow mine for a bit, if I can remember where I put the bloody thing. Depending on the time of your MOT I can possibly run it over. BUT, you can't change the water pump with the radiator in situ on a 13/60 and I don't know if you can on yours. So you may have the factor in the time or removing it and putting it back. Not long, but can be annoying.Water pump is a 10 minute job.

ferny
I can't see much point in going to yours through town in rush-hour to drop off a fan which may not fit a watetpump which isn't there. :o;D
