Mr Elsie
Hi, I've just sourced a replacement water pump housing and water pump including the appropriate gaskets. The gaskets appear very thin and papery and wanted to check if this was normal? The ones that came off appeared to be much thicker.Would I also need to use any gasket glue on these areas? Water pump to housing and water housing to block.
ferny
Aye, they're a bit thin now! Make sure all surfaces are flat etc then whack it together with some sealant. I use this;http://www.handwerker-versand.de/products/Wohnen-Renovieren/Kleb-Dichtstoffe/Dichtstoffe/Teroson-Fluid-D-200ml.htmlYou can always make your own gaskets if you want as well. I use grease on gasket surfaces.I once worked for a company who had maintainance contracts with large oil distributors for repairs on fuel tankers. Any fuel transfer pump , metering unit, filter housing or manifold I built using grease never leaked. In fact when one needed doing it was me got put on it. Fuel is great for creating leaks. One day I was round with our parts suppliers who also did a lot of repair work. Their foreman said to me " Oh you are the guy who builds the pumps that dont leak, we can never get them not to leak."
Nick Jones
I use cereal packets for making those gaskets..... Greasing gasket surfaces may help them shift and wriggle into the gaps as compressed...... Been known to use it myself - or blue Hylomar.Nick

molten
great little thread. very ingenious and useful. I presume vaselene is an alternative to grease on any paper based gasket anywhere on the engine - yes?
