are the plugs wet? if so is it over fueling

cheers Ben

Yes they do seem/smell a bit petroly ?! Carb or fuel pump? Just noticed that the clear inline fuel filter is empty of fuel after the car has been stood, so the fuel must be draining in whist stationery? Anyone had any probs with the acclaim fuel pump? Mines done 75k miles...

Why would new plugs suddenly stop a working car from working? That's the question.

Try the old plugs - does it work again?
Have you damaged a lead when replacing them? If they're old, renew. Don't bother with Halfords universal stuff as it's shite.
When did you last renew the rotor arm and cap? They do wear out and are probably 30 years old now so worth replacing.
If it's still duff then replace the coil.

I see no reason for changing the electrics side of the car (plugs) will knock out the fueling - unless the choke cable has suddenly gone poop. And the plugs will smell wet if they're not sparking as they aren't igniting anything...

Sorry should prob start at the beginning ( usually the best place) car has run like a dream during 10 years of ownership & daily use, until... I drove through a mahoosive puddle on my way to work (it was 4.30 am and dark) car cut out: managed to restart after 10 mins of trying but run like a bag of spanners: poor idle etc. changed dizzy/rotor/plugs wd40'd everything etc. now think its a fueling  issue (overfuelling?) which was what the mot tester seemed to think on Friday (when it passed with no advisories as usual!)

Becky II would have problems in very heavy rain or if I drove through a big puddle. New plugs, HT leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap solved it. Be aware that new parts can be duff. I had a brand new rotor arm fail on me and the car had passed the MoT earlier on that day. It does happen.

Sorry to butt in on your conversation, but I keep seeing comments about watching where you get parts from, and watching out for cheap replacement parts etc etc....so where do you guys get GOOD replacement parts from, for your engine? is there a specific place you go, or do you trawl the internet every time? Thanks. Adam.

So how wet is your air filter element?

That aside, I find it much more likely to be ignition related as water and electrics are known enemies.  Plug leads would be prime suspect as whenever you disturb them it seems to work for a bit......  Dizzy cap after that..... then coil king lead/coil.

Cheers

Nick

It would appear I've lead you up the garden path- apologies! Yes there was crud in the air cleaner housing. The filter/plugs/leads/dizzy etc even the coil were all changed with spares I had from an acclaim I broke a few years back.. However, have just noticed hissing (air drawn in) around offside carb so I'm thinking vacuum pipe/gasket? Would certainly explain bad starting/crap idle! Nothing to do with taking the car for a swim, but then my life is punctuated with unfortunate coincidences.... Thanks for all the replies I'll try & look at it at the w/end ;-)

probably nothing to do with the problem, having seen your last post, but I had similar starting issues after driving through deep puddles, and then stopping for a while in cold weather. Turned out the problem was slight damp inside the  the distributor cap, no sign of cracks or a bad seal, and the problem recurred with known to be good spares, eventually I solved the problem by taking the cap off on  a really hot day and letting it all warm up in the sun for a few hours, then refitting and spraying dampstart over the join. I think a tiny bit of moisture had become trapped somewhere in the workings of the dizzy and would evaporate when driving, only to recondense on the inside of the cap when it cooled down, drying out or replacing the cap only provided a new surface for it to condense onto. Had a couple of years trouble free  (well...that starting trouble anyway) since.

Interesting info Jon: I've now replaced leads dizzy rotor etc with brand NEW parts & sorted leaking vacuum hose. It starts much better but not as good as pre-puddle (which was always 1st time instantly) recon you're bang on with the moisture in the distributor theory! I'll wait for some hot weather and follow your advice (might get a hot day sometime in 2017...)
