mazfg
After having been messing about with my mixture, trying the carb setup way and the colour tune way and finally the "it sounds best there" way...I took the Vitesse for a spin on the ring road. These are the plugs #2 and #5 corresponding to each carb. They're a light grey in colour, do they look ok? It idles best with the mixture set as it is. In the end the best way I found was to move a notch on the mixture and listen..quite time consuming but my best outcome. Thanks, Matt
junkuser
Could be on the lean side. Any pinking at low revs, wide throttle in 4th?
mazfg
Doesn't seem to be and its advanced a few degrees more than spec.Any deviation at idle from the current mixture and it doesn't sound right, so thinking it must be correct...?
ferny
They do look a touch lean. I like to run mine a tiny bit richer than is really needed for my own piece of mind. The plugs in both the Herald and Acclaim are the colour of a marginally undercooked digestive biscuit.
mazfg
I'll undo a 1/4 turn and see how that goes. I did have mixture screws initially set at 2.5 turns out (currently they're 2 turns out) and they were a biscuity brown then....shame it doesn't idle as well there.... Will just persevere and keep adjusting :)
junkuser
If the plugs were removed after power on and quick shut down possibly needle contour or damper spring tension could be looked at to give this satisfactory idle with somewhat richer at power. Depends on what performance you are aiming at and how much fiddling you feel worthwhile.Maybe others with similar engine setup to yours could pass on their experiences. mazfg
Needles are standard 7b for my 150CD's and they are the earlier ones that have no springs on the pistons.Performance wise, I just want it to run as efficiently as possible.

ferny
Ones you've cooked? What shade of cremated is the bourbon biscuit?
Nick Jones
In my limited experience, PI plugs usually look like the thing has been running on a mixture of coal and diesel - but that's probably the result of a knackered injection and knackered rings......Nick
junkuser
I don't know what the correct setup is for those carburetors on your particular engine. Maybe they should have springs as they do cause the mixture to be richer at higher air flows. The lack of pre-ignition suggests that during acceleration the mixture is OK but the damper oil is doing its job here, (along with the advance curve of the distributor of course). mazfg
I do happen to have some blue coded springs. When I first got the carbs I thought the springs were missing and got some from Rimmers. On looking through the "Tuning for Strombergs" book, it says that both Vitesse 1600 and Mk1 2l have no springs, whereas the MKII has blue coded springs.I can see the logic though and may pop them in and see if there is a difference in spark plug colour, if this helps then Ill stick with them as the idle is perfect as I can get it on current mixture settings..which is 2 turns out from touching piston. This is a full turn in from the recommended starting point of 3 turns....
junkuser
Will be interesting to see if this changes things Matt.
mazfg
Update: Put the springs in....all that happened was that this seemed to increase the richeness of the mixture, weather idling or driving. Pulled plugs, found them black, idling was very lumpy too, leaning off the mixture more, smoothed out the idling to a nice running......Have removed springs and kept as it was. I believe it likes it at idle where it is and although looks a little lean ....seems ok...no knocking or pinking.. the engine does sound happiest with it's curretn settings at idle. Any deviation by even a flat of the mixture screw, makes it sound wrong....so must be correct 8)
