Tom2000
The right carb in the picture below (when revving) is not moving freely, I've taken it all out and it looks exactly the same as the other one any ideas?

Tom2000
Rear carb isn't stuck, front is so I removed both piston assemblies and decided to swap them over so the known working assembly went into the front carb which was previously stuck. Now the front works but not the rear, which means the issue must be with the assembly itself, despite looking clean i'm going to give it abit more of a clean and see if it works, else i suppose i'll have to source a different one. Dicky Blighter
Tom - try turning the cover round by one screw (i.e. rotate 1/3) they usually only work freely in one of the 3 positions.
Tom2000
Dicky, when inserting the problem piston assembly into either carb you can feel that it drops in nice and smoothly until its about half way in, the assembly then has to be pushed into place as it won't drop on its own accord. Surely this suggests that there is something on the assembly that is catching and getting it stuck.. but its clean as a whistle! The only thing that I can see that seems wrong with it is I think it has some ever so slight holes? Fizzy
i once got stuck at thickthorn services, and eventually worked out that the piston wasn't moving in one of the carbs. i took the cover off, and everything seemed fine, so i put it back on. tried again and it didnt work. i started to unscrew the screws to have another look, then got distracted. for some reason the next thing i done was try start the car, and to my surprise it started right up. after 5 minutes trial and error, it seemed that for some reason the carb would only work properly with the lid loosened off, despite running perfectly for 45 minutes previous to parking up.when i got home i swapped with some other pistons and it cured the problem, the carb could run with the lid fully tightened. weird, and never worked out why it suddenly stopped after working perfectly. Tom2000
Figured out what was wrong, I bent one of my new needles. both assemblies after a clean now fit in perfectly, one of the needles i got I must have managed to bend..

Tom2000
Right, I got the replacement needle and am still experiencing resistance, is this an issue with the jet at the bottom of the carb?
beefertoo
try assembling without the needle in that way you'll see if its the piston at fault or the needle.craig
Tom2000
OK sorted resistance, was a matter of centering the needle with the jet properly - oddly controlled by getting the right amount of torque on the grub screw that holds the needle in place. Anyway I got the engine warm, adjusted the carbs slightly, double checked all the fluids etc and took her for a gentle drive 2 miles to get some petrol car was all fine, idling at about 650rpm quite happily, forgot my bloody wallet so had to leave some collateral at the petrol station, drove back for wallet, started moving her gradually through the rev range and seemed quite happy, even put my foot down towards the end quite abit! - WAHOOOO! FIXED! Power and torque - fantastic!Stopped off at home, got wallet, back in car and the car is hesitating worse than before, instance reaction was to check the pistons were not stuck again, - all fine. Then checked oil in dashpot - all fine, now I know I need to get someone to give the carbs a proper adjustment to suit the new needles but this strikes me as very odd given that it drove fine for about 2 miles and then proceeded to start the issue all over again but worse (lower RPMs) - which I would guess is the new needles? So now I'm thinking, fuel pump or a blockage in a fuel line somewhere? :/
Tom2000
OK I should really stop posting.Borrowed a friends colour tune and carb balancer, he gave me a hand, starved the engine of fuel and adjusted 1 quarter at a time, there was WAY to much fuel going into the engine. Sorted now, car is driving well, going to spend the next 2 days off readjusting as I drive.
thescrapman
It sounded like you had fuel vapourisation, coming back to it after being parked for a couple of minutes.CheersColin
Tom2000
Nope the issue was that I had replaced the needles with AAU from ABT and just driven it off without retuning the carbs, so I took the entire carbs off today and reset everything, spent about 2 hours driving down the same stretch off road and now the car is running beautifully done nearly 80 miles today, lots of pull and lots of power :)
