FloydP
Hi All,Just changed the fuel pump diaphragm and that seems to be working, perhaps a bit to well as petrol is pouring out of the back carb.So a couple of questions do you think I should try and clear the float valve with an air line or is it safer to take the carb to bits?Next the air filter is soaked in petrol (standard paper type) is this ok to use again once it's dry or is it knackered? Thanks,Floyd. firebobby
Have you used the car recently or has it been standing some time.If it's been standing, it could be the inlet valve in the carb is stuck open and allowing fuel to keep flowing when the float bowls are full
sparky_spit
If it were me, I'd take the float chamber top off and have a look in the float valve. It could be a lump of crud in there, or maybe some crusty stuff as it's been idle for a while. Blowing it out might clear it, but you don't where the crud is going to end up.As long as the air filter is dry, I think it will be okay. In my cheapskate days, I used to wash paper filters out in petrol, then take them down to the local garage and upset them by running all their air out of their airline tank drying them. Obviously not 100% perfect but they seemed to work okay afterwards.
FloydP
I think your right, I was looking for the easy option (as ever) It looks fairly awkward to remove the float chamber in situ as it detaches from underneath, I'll give it a go with a mirror and if it goes tits up I'll take the inlet manifold off and do it properly. The air filters are fairly new and have no dirt on them so I was reluctant to bin them if there likely to be ok, I'll see how they look when they dry out.Cheers,Floyd. Richard B
You might want to get a couple of gaskets for the float chamber - carburretor body. :-/If they are old they tend to tear. :'(Do you have a fuel filter to stop crap damaging/blocking the car needle valves?ps sometimes the valves stick and tapping the body with a screwdriver will reseat them. FloydP
I do have a fuel filter, but it's before the pump and I'm wondering if when the diaphragm failed some of it ended up in the carbs. With the RBRR coming up I think I'll bite the bullet and order a couple of new needle valves along with the new gaskets, can the valves be changed on the car or do the carbs have to be removed? sparky_spit
Just realised you have probably got Strombergs on your car... I was thinking SUs where you can whip the top off quicker than I can type this. I thought you were just being a lazy git....
FloydP
Yes to both, I have got Strombergs and I'm also a lazy git.
