Fizzy
right so i just phoned Andrew Turner to get some new needles, and going by the tag thats on the lid, they're from an Austin Morris 1100 ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) ??) the tag says "AUD 13"obviously i have no idea if the tag is original to the carbs, i can only assume it is. they had BO needles fitted, which are std MK3 spit fitting, so i can only assume somebody previous to me has fitted them either oblivious to the carbs, or trying to make them better. i really have no idea.anybody know how different these would be to proper spitfire ones ? the lady on the phone said they might not be that different, but cant be sure. i dont know where to go from here, a rebuilt set from AT is out of my price range at the moment. with nothing to compare them to performance wise, and with a rolling road also out of my price range right now, im stumped. yep, basically i have no price range !!will they be restricting my car if they're meant for an 1100 ? this also throws into question whether my intake manifold is right, it has the mech for the 'from above' throttle linkage, but my spit uses the lever arm thingy that comes direct from the pedal. i dont know how the austin throttle worked, but my manifold does look like the one on my mates spit, although even that engine is from a toledo ;D.what should the AUD number be for a spitfire pair ? according to the phone call, there are 4 possible numbers all fitted to a 1300 spitoh dear :B
Howard81
They look spot on for a Spit MK3 to me..Manifold is MKIV, the MK3 had a breather where that round blanking plug is.On the MKIV the breather on the manifold was discontinued and pipe re-routed to the carbs. Your carbs dont have the connection for that. I can't see where the pipe from the manifold goes!!That explains why you have the redundant bracket on the manifold. As long as the needles and springs are correct for a MK3 you'll be fine. DaveKent
well the austin is an "A" series engine, which is a different design to your spitfire engine, so its manifold wont fit; therefore assume you have the correct manifold.hs2 carbs are pretty much hs2 carbs, so i wouldn't worry about what car they came off, so long as they have the correct needles.the only thing you really need to worry about between these two applications is that the A series has the carb body at an angle, so the lugs on the float chamber may be different, to sit it level. Check yours, the spit carbs are pretty much level, and so should the float chamber. if its bottom is canted toward the engine it is wrong.! Fizzy
Well this is all good news then. Im pretty sure my chambers sit level, ill check next time i go out though. The engine is actually early mkIV which i will mention when i order the needles and springs, incase it means i need different needles to having a mk3 engine.Cheers
