Hello chaps,
Can anyone help me? I'm in touch with a student nurse who drives a 1200 herald who's carb is broken. She needs a Solex B30 PSE1 and I'm just wondering if anyone has a spare going at a reasonable price. Believe it or not she drives it daily so she's out of action transport wise.

Thanks
S.

Thanks Nang, I'll let you know. I've managed to find out that the same carb was fitted to the Vauxhall Viva in the UK and there are a couple on ebay uk, albeit a bit rough looking. A brand new one is £175 but I don't think she will want to pay that much. I'll keep you posted.

What is wrong with the carburettor?  In my experience not a lot goes wrong with these Solex carbs.  Usual suspects include a blocked slow running jet.

I agree. Blocked jets are common, particularly that slow-running jet and the "gooseneck" jet from the accelerator pump. On the other hand, I've a few B30s that had apparently seen some pretty ham-fisted attempts to adjust them, with pretty much fatal results.  :'(

Agree cleaning and adjusting should cure most ills.
Be careful not to lose the ball bearing from under the accelerator jet ( I think everyone does that the first time they take one apart!)
You can get overhaul kits for them which gives you new spindle, pump diaphragm, jets etc.

I spoke to the owner over the 'phone last week, the problem is that the pivot for the choke has stripped it's thread in the carb's body. Unfortunately I couldn't help with a ready-to-go carb, all I have here are complete unknowns which would need a stripdown and rebuild.

I reckon a reasonable repair could be done with a metal-filled epoxy filler, but it needs a tinkerer to look at it - it's the kind of job professional garages don't want to know about,

Cheers,
Bill.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has done something like this successfully and how they did it. I've at least one B30 with several of the top cover screw holes stripped out....

  • 1 month later...

I fixed this today, I tapped the hole in the carb to a M6 thread, and used an M6 bolt with an adapted sleeve I made for the shoulder. It works, and the car runs and drives. I promised to return and teach her how to do a service, as the car would benefit from new plugs, coil, leads and a dizzy tune.
