Paint code accuracy

Question first, in case you can't be ar4ed reading the explanation...

What are the chances of 2 different paints (both 2 pack but different manufacturers) made up to the same paint code by two different places matching?

I've just finished painting my bonnet, doors and bootlid. It's a pretty rushed job, and I accept that I need to do it again in a year or two to make it perfect.

I stupidly also ran out of paint, everythings blue more or less but it could do with some more. Another 250ml would have done the job...

I'm pretty sure that a local shop has got some paint of the right code that they mixed up in error, which I maybe can fetch tommorrow and put another coat on in the evening.

What are the chances of them matching? Well......technically they should be the same or so close as to not really be noticable.

In reality they can be pretty different. I've used paint from Halfords, the TSSC and two or three companies off the internet and they've all been slightly different even though they all profess to be 'Tahiti Blue'.

If I were you I'd try and get the same place as before to mix paints from the same manufacturer as before or failing that try out a bit of both on a spare panel and compare the two before you do the rest of the car.

FWIW I think you would be safer going to the same manufacturer for another quantity.  At least then then the pigments will be the same, mixed in the same proportions as the paint your sprayed on the car.

You might be ok with the batch the other firm has - but perhaps worth taking advice from a pro sprayer?

Bonnet looks great in the pic - shame to spoil a good job!

Absolutely b***er all chance of them matching.

You will always be able to spot the difference.

If you still have a bit of the original, you can do some blending in to gradually change from 1 supplier to the other. or buy enough for a complete coat of teh car.

Cheers

Well,

Needs must, had to buy a 1/2 litre from a different place so that I could sand down and blow one more coat on the bonnet and doors. The preps a long way from perfect so it'll be a respray for the whole of the outside of the car in a couple of years anyway.

At first comparison it's not a bad match, I'll report back with a photo when the bonnet and doors are back on the car.
